Agiltron fiber optic matrix switches simultaneous connecting between N number of input and M number output fibers, in a fully non-blocking, all-optical, cross-connect configuration. Matrix optical switches enable dynamic reconfiguration function to an optical network, increasing its reliability as well as sharing resource.

Agiltron offers unique 2D Matrix Optical Switch technologies having key advantages over 3D Matrix Optical Switch technologies. A 3D optical switch has mirrors that rotate about two axes, as shown in Fig.1. An input light can be redirected via two sets of mirrors to one of the outputs. This approach is analog in nature which requires comprehensive pre-calibrations of control condition for each port

position as well as environmental effects. Current commercial 3D switches have a major shortcoming in which the calibration often drifts over time due to residual charge build-up. Moreover, a majority of them are very slow (~15ms) due to the need to rest to a starting position after each switching. These drawbacks limit their reliability. On the other hand, a 2D matrix switch mirrors are arranged in a crossbar configuration as shown in Fig.2. Each mirror has only two positions and is placed at the intersections of light paths. They can be in either the on position to reflect light or the off position to let light pass uninterrupted. The binary nature of the mirror positions makes the control very simple with fast response speed. Moreover, latching function can be implemented in a 2D optical switch matrix so that light paths are preserved when power is removed. Latching capability increases reliability and reduces power consumption.

Three 2D Matrix Optical Switch Technologies For All Application Scenarios

Agiltron produces three types of 2D matrix switches for various application scenarios. We have been producing magneto-optical based CrystaLatch™ 2D matrix switches for over 19 years. This family of non-mechanical switches provides a unique solution for applications that require high speed and high reliability; including Lidars, undersea, aerospace, and outpace with a large customer base. Our 2D MEMS matrix switches offer high reliability without the concern for long term drift, fast switching speed, fail to save latching function, and low power consumption. We currently produce port count up to 32×32 with uniform insertion loss of less than 2dB for each light path. Our SelfAlign™ matrix switches are based on fiber-to -fiber technology without coating, offering a unique solution for large mode fibers and high power operation (>10W) with very low loss (0.3dB), a preferred solution for instrumentations and testing.
