Woburn, Mass. — Photonwares Co., a vertically integrated manufacturer of premium fiberoptic components, announces a technical breakthrough that shrinks the size of an optical switch by over 20 times. Fiber optic switches are widely used to control Internet traffic. This new family of PCB-direct-mountable, Ultra-Mini Fiber Optic Switches promotes greater integration of optics with electronics. The new optical switches are produced with and based on Photonwares’ patented, thermally activated micro-machined mirror, which moves in and out of the optical path. This advanced design offers high stability and high reliability, as well as a low-cost advantage without the charge-induced drift and moisture sensitivity associated with conventional electrostatic micro-mechanical systems (MEMS) switches. The Ultra-Mini switches are Telcordia standard GR1221 qualified. Photonwares provides customized design and modular assemblies to meet a wide range of control and integration applications.
