The NECL Series tunable laser source is an InP-based, ultra-narrow linewidth External Cavity Laser (ECL) engineered for high-performance optical applications. It integrates a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) for optical power amplification, shutter functionality, and power control, enabling fast and precise wavelength tuning. The laser chip operates at a fixed temperature to eliminate thermal drift, while an internal wavelength locker ensures stability by aligning the output to the 50 GHz or 100 GHz ITU grid and providing real-time monitoring of front-facet power for feedback control to the SOA. The output is delivered through polarization-maintaining fiber, supporting seamless integration with external modulators. The NECL laser is mounted on a driver board featuring wavelength selection, variable power control, shuttered tuning, all accessible via an RS-232 interface. A compact module version is available for OEM system integration, while the turn-key benchtop version provides up to 200 mW of optical output power and is optimized for laboratory use. For applications requiring stable output power adjustments, an external variable attenuator can be added.
The NECL is capable of outputting the ITU grid channel number, with each readout cycle taking approximately 1.25 ms. Consequently, the wavelength scan rate must be slowed accordingly.
