The Variable RF-Photonic Time Delay System (RPTD) is a fully integrated, turn-key solution that delivers precise, true-time delay of RF signals with direct RF input/output, eliminating the need for external RF amplifiers. Engineered over 15 years of refinement, the RPTD offers unmatched performance with delay lengths up to 50 ms, fast delay switching speeds down to 10 ns, high resolution up to 25 bits, and operation up to 40 GHz. Internally, the RF signal is converted to an optical signal and routed through a digitally controlled bank of optical fiber segments; delay variation is achieved by switching combinations of these segments using proprietary nanosecond-speed optical switches. Our low-intrinsic-delay optical amplifiers compensate for fiber and switch losses, while optional chromatic compensators and amplifier modules enable customization of link performance. The system includes built-in temperature monitoring, segment status diagnostics, and supports control via USB/GUI, RS232, and TTL through a D-sub connector; a touchscreen interface is available as an option. Ideal for radar testing, phased array systems, signal processing, and phase noise analysis, the RPTD offers greater flexibility and delay precision than traditional coax or waveguide systems.
