The UFSS is an ultra-fast fiber optical shutter or 1×1 switch based on a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), offering switching speeds of approximately 1 ns. It combines low polarization sensitivity, broad optical bandwidth, and a high extinction ratio. By utilizing the gain and absorption properties of a multiple-quantum-well (MQW) structure, the UFSS provides effective optical blocking with minimal back reflection, making it well suited for high-performance and precision optical applications. Designed to support high gain and optical signal levels, the UFSS provides reliable operation at input powers of 15 dBm or higher. Optical isolators are required at both the input and output to suppress ASE background noise. The UFSS is housed in an industry-standard 14-pin butterfly package and is available with either single-mode (SM) or polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber pigtails terminated with FC/APC connectors. For PM fiber models, the connector key is aligned with the slow axis. Switching performance is critically dependent on the drive electronics. An all-in-one, plug-and-play benchtop version is therefore also available, integrating the high-speed driver and power supply. The benchtop unit provides an SMA control input on the front panel and a universal 100–240 VAC power input on the rear panel for convenient system integration.
