The HVPD Series Bipolar High-Voltage Driver is a turnkey unit that delivers sharp electrical pulses of up to ±1 kV with a 1 MHz bandwidth, ideal for driving large aperture electro-optic (EO) modulators. The unit includes a manual voltage adjustment knob, BNC pulse trigger input with two control modes — normal and analog —selectable via a switch. For high-voltage and high-repetition-rate operation, integrated water-cooling ports ensure thermal stability and reliable performance. It comes with cables for connecting to Agiltron EO modulators.
This is a bipolar driver, meaning the voltage polarity on the electrodes constantly flips to prevent DC charge buildup (ionic migration) inside the EO crystal. On the first pulse, Pin A is +V and Pin B is -V. On the second pulse, the polarities reverse: Pin A becomes -V and Pin B becomes +V. Because ions are relatively heavy and move slowly, this rapid “back and forth” reversal prevents them from reaching the crystal surface and forming a “screening layer” that would otherwise degrade the modulator’s performance over time. By utilizing this bipolar drive method, the modulator maintains a stable extinction ratio with consistent half-wave voltage even during long-term operation.
