The NFNM Ultra-Fast Fiber Optical Switch utilizes a cascaded architecture based on 1×2 or 2×2 optical switches. Each switch is based on a patented electro-optical configuration featuring low optical loss, wide-temperature operation, and polarization-insensitive performance. The NS Series fiber optical switch provides ultra-high reliability and is designed for continuous operation for more than 25 years, including operation in vibration environments, with Telcordia and space qualification testing. The switch is intrinsically bidirectional and is available in either polarization-independent (PI) or polarization-maintaining (PM) configurations. The rise and fall times are intrinsically determined by the electro-optical crystal properties, while the achievable repetition rate is primarily associated with the electronic driver. The NF Series switch is mounted on an electronic driver with a 5 V TTL control input through an SMA connector and a DC power supply. The NS Series switches can respond to control signals with arbitrary timing at repetition frequencies ranging from DC to the MHz range. Due to mechanical resonances within the device, there may be certain frequency bands in which the ON/OFF ratio does not meet the specified value. Upon request, the switch and driver can be optimized for operation at specific frequencies. The switch is normally mounted on a tuned driver and optimized prior to shipment. Electrical power consumption depends on the switching repetition rate. A dual-stage configuration can be used to significantly improve the extinction ratio and reduce optical crosstalk.
